Pinion, alongside ERI Solutions and Ruby Canyon Environmental, are excited to announce a unique offering to assist businesses in meeting the California Air Resources Board (CARB) LCFS verification and reporting standards due in 2021.

Through this strategic collaboration, businesses that produce ethanol, biodiesel, and dairy biomethane (among others), within or for California, will be able to easier navigate the complexities of the LCFS validation and verification process and streamline the reporting of carbon intensity calculations and documentation.

“The details of this CARB regulation are pretty complex,“ says Donna Funk, principal and biofuels industry leader at Pinion.  “There can be roadblocks with CARB’s conflict of interest rules, and it can get complicated to find and onboard multiple service providers to handle the entire LCFS process and ensure all of the requirements are being met.  Whereas, this cohesive network of firms provides a producer with the peace of mind that three things are happening simultaneously without any independence issues:  1.) streamlined calculations, documentation and reporting, 2.) consulting to help you gain compliance and maximize your carbon intensity score, and 3.) proper third-party validation and verification.”

Under the CARB requirements, LCFS certification is required to be renewed annually, and businesses must rotate verification service providers every few years.  By joining forces to complete LCFS preparations, validation, verification, and reviews, Pinion, ERI, and Ruby Canyon can provide uninterrupted, full-service certification support and planning for businesses.

It is recommended that producers required to undergo the validation and verification process begin the process early in 2021 to meet all of the requirements set by CARB’s August 2021 reporting deadline.

LCFS Background:

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) finalized amended requirements for third party verification  to the Low Carbon Fuels Standard (LCFS) which became effective January 1, 2019.  Other states are also implementing LCFS-like programs to reduce their emissions. Oregon is creating the Clean Fuels Program, and the Renewable Fuel Standard is a federal program that continues to drive clean fuel production, aiding state-level programs that incent adoption.
